HANDMADE
Within the watchmaking world of new and even centuries old brands that populate the market, virtually all timepieces are created utilising so called ‘CNC machining’. This means the parts are designed and codified on a computer in great detail (even down to the finishing, visual and tolerance aspects), thereafter machined directly out of metal using a milling machine completely controlled by computer, subsequently assembled with or without some hand polishing techniques added to supply them some ‘humanity’.
This approach was anathema for me, as my goal, following the Daniels method as set out in his well-known book, was to go to the limit of the human eye and hand by creating all these parts by myself using only the most simple hand guided machines - exactly as was the case in the 18th and 19th centuries - the only difference today being electricity taking the place of the foot treadle or water power utilised by watchmakers during those periods, (along with the assistance the high quality microscopes available to us today!)
This means that my timepieces are truly created by hand, from every screw found in the movement to the entire escapement – and everything in between. The only parts not made by me are the sapphire front and back, along with the balance and barrel springs – parts impossible to make by hand without the assistance of a large-scale industrial factory.
